How to upgrade from v3.6.1 to v4.2.1

Hello all, I'm really new to netbox and I need to upgrade an existent installation from 3.6.1 to the latest 4.2.1 how should I do that? Should I go to all steps or should I jump directly to the latest? What are the steps I need to perform to do that in a secure mode?

I had done step by step, 3.6.1 > 3.6.9 > 3.7.0 > 3.7.8 > 4.0.0 > 4.0.11 > 4.1.0 > 4.1.11 > 4.2.0 (with bug) > 4.2.2
Run it direct from 3.6.1 to 4.2.2 made some DB upgrade error.

I had tryed 3.7.11 > 4.2.2 w/out success, too many DB upgrade not doable, was fast for me to roll-back and do step-by-step upgrade, it works and now I'm happy on 4.2.2.

Hi, I had struggled a while also as many others. There were issues common to many people, and some others more specific.
If you are lucky, you should just be able to do the migration by simply following the documentation as already pointed out. On this regard, just reading the documentation could have spared the creation of this discussion.

If you were to face any issue, I will put a few highlights here.

1. You must indeed reach the latest version in 3.x.x possible. In my case, this was 3.7.8.
2. You should be able to directly jump to your targeted 4.x.x version, but I personally went to 4.0.x first.
   Because of 4.1.x introducing the versioning, so plugins would work on 4.0.x but not 4.1.x and onwards. It's also easier to go step by step.
3. Again, the modules: They are not all correctly done and this can mislead you easily.
   • Be sure to be on the correct version of the plugin for the version you are currently targeting.
   • You might need to remove a module during the migration. This was my case with
     netbox-attachments plugin
