  • Design some exercises around bigger pieces of code (probably ones that do not require the code to be printed)

  • Design some exercises that look at code structure. As a group we did not find the indenting / colouring exercise useful, but we all agree there are considerations around structure and there is value in learning how to glance at a block of code and see immediately which parts go together in blocks. Maybe it was not useful because it's more for python or for beginners?

  • Design some exercises that help the group define a phonology

Drawing without paper tip:

I've found it most helpful to just have the code at high-ish resolution in a .jpg/png, and use a new layer for each exercise in simple editor like Paint.net. If you turn down the layer opacity you can scribble and still see the code.

@marxian suggests an obfuscation exercise to rename variable abstractly and see if is interesting.
