focus() on TextView doesn't really focus

In an event handler, using a jquery focus like:

$('#' + M.ViewManager.getView('recordsPage', 'inputField').id).focus();

highlights the TextView with a blue glow, but does not place the insertion cursor in the text box. How do I really focus on the text box and have the mobile device's virtual keyboard appear?
