Convolutional Networks

I'm trying to understand the nitty-gritty of convolutional networks, but i dont seem to understand what convolution is or why the bell curve is present in machine learning at all. Basically, I kinda feel lost in the maths section of the convolutional neural networks while trainingying to understand them from the inside out. If someone has someome resources that might help me or someone like me. Your efforts and knowledge are highly appreciated.
