<p>I’ve noticed that many authentication providers & <a href="https://authjs.dev/reference/providers/oauth-builtin">libraries</a> fail to mention Ed Tech software like Clever, Canvas, or other LTI SSO providers. Given the variety in OAuth2 implementations, you do need a specific integration. This is one area where we could do better in open source.</p>

<p>In my day job, we work with transformer models a lot, so I’m always interested in how they advance. I played around with the <a href="https://chat.openai.com/chat">OpenAI Chatbot</a> and found the results compelling. Asking it to generate a coding tutorial (“How would you create an event sourcing application in PHP 8?") was pretty great, though I recognized sentences it generated as coming from a couple of the more popular human-written tutorials on that subject.</p>
<p>The thing to remember about large language models is that they are all about probabilities and correlation. A large enough model “knows” that in the presence of certain other words – not exactly semantic context, but close enough for jazz – the word “python” and “snake” are equivalent, while in other contexts, “python” and “programming language” are related. Given the presence of words in the prompt, the model can predict what words should probably follow in a response.</p>
<p>This can lead to sentences that read like actual thought. In many cases, they are the product of thought, just not the machine’s. They’re the product of human thought, repeated enough times that patterns appear in the data. But probabaility isn’t certainty, and the machine can generate perfectly reasonable sentences and plausible “arguments” that are completely incorrect.</p>
<p>To wit: Since <a href="https://micro.blog/books/9780307418692">Viriconium</a> is on my mind lately, I asked the machine how that book relates to Harrison’s later works. The result was convincing enough that I had to take a look at reviews of the books in question to be sure I hadn’t missed something on my recent reading of <em>Light</em> and <em>Travel Arrangements</em>. The concluding paragraph here is 100% completely incorrect, and when asking the chatbot to try again, it generated a response that said the exact opposite.</p>
<p>Any time you play with one of these technologies, I advise you to keep in mind: The model does not think. It only predicts based on what it has seen in the past. A useful illusion, but still an illusion.</p>

<p>I have a vivid memory – cir. 1983, so I’d’ve been 14 – walking into the room while Reagan was on the TV & asking my grandmother if he’d announced the war with Russia had started. I didn’t think there’d be any other reason for him to be on in the middle of the day.</p>
<p>I remember a (delusional) sense of relief when the Soviet Union broke up. There was just enough of the weight of that dread finally lifting. I think this is why these constant existential threats don’t send me into a panic. It was always going to happen.</p>

<p>Prior to <a href="https://www.holidayworld.com/">Holiday World</a>, my jobs had all been farm work, putting up hay or working tobacco for neighbors and getting paid in cash out of a farmer’s wallet at the end of the week. In the summer of 1987, I made $3.35 an hour – minus taxes and the rent on 5 SaniClean uniforms a week (name in a blue oval patch over the breast and everything) – swinging a weedeater or pushing a lawnmower or occasionally digging out the icy, knee-deep clay next to a leaking room-sized freezer, from a few hours before the park opened until a few hours before it closed. By the end of the summer, I was about fifty pounds lighter and had no problem breathing through a respirator mask all day in the humid Southern Indiana summer air. I don’t think I’m violating any kind of NDA by reporting that Santa Claus’s real name back then was Ray, though I might be misremembering that. The experience of that summer inspired the first story I selected for my MA thesis, and a second story, <a href="https://michael.manley.org/writing/fiction/believing_in_santa_claus/">“Believing in Santa Claus”</a>, that became one of the first pieces of fiction I ever published. I still think about that job any time I see a ditch that someone has left unmown.</p>
<p>So when they offered up these shirts for sale earlier this year, I broke my usual rule about no clothing with words or pictures or patterns and snapped one up. Showed up in the mail today. Happy anniversary, y’all.</p>

<p>I’ll admit that I bought a membership to Medium solely out of annoyance. I ran into too many articles on software development lodged behind the paywall. (In particular, discussions of open source projects.) I considered the annual fee a nuisance cost.</p>
<p>With this content, Medium made that cost deliver much more value than the price. The Programmatic Programmer influenced much of my journeyman thinking in software development, and many other books in the press’s line helped my career over the years.</p>
<p>In particular, the book Behind Closed Doors by Johanna Rothman and Esther Derby is still a resource I would hand to any young engineer facing their first management job.</p>
<p>I’m not certain I would consume a lot of technical publications this way, but I applaud the PragProg publishers for trying this experiment.</p>

<p>Most everything is subject to endless debate, but two things I find true after over thirty years doing this:</p>

<p>If your software doesn’t solve a real problem that real people have, no matter how well-written it may be, it isn’t interesting. Real problems include exercises that help you learn how to build software, and many games, but not 90% of the stuff launched on ProductHunt (looking at you, “Squat-O-Meter”).</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Don’t just reflect on what went wrong in retrospectives: Celebrate what went right, too. That’s not a waste of time. Ignoring a team’s successes is just as damaging long-term as ignoring a team’s dysfunctions.</p>
</li>

<p>While taking dexamethasone during her cancer treatment, my mother, who once agonized for a week over the purchase of a $3 ornament, told my father she needed to go shopping for new socks to warm her neuropathy-chilled feet. They came home with a brand new car. Just saying.</p>
