Sound Comparisons offline

There is an offline version of the Sound Comparisons website available that takes advantage of the fact that most of the code that the client uses is JavaScript running in the browser.

Running the offline version

The offline version comes as a bunch of folders and files looking similar to this list:

css data img index.html js LICENSE mapnik README.md sound
  1. Open index.html in your favourite Browser. Chrome, Firefox and Safari should work fine. The URL should start with file://.
  2. A dialog box should appear asking for module files.
  3. Use the file selection of that dialog box to select all files given in the data directory of your copy of Soundcomparisons.
  4. In the background of the dialog box the website should start to render.
  5. It is now save to close the dialog box by clicking on x. The underlying website should be ready to use.

Folder Structure

  • Main folder: contains the actual programme, and is relatively small [c. 80 MB zipped, as of 2019 12 01].
  • Within the main folder: index.html and various subfolders:
  • Folder sound: contains all sound files, and is therefore huge. [c. 80 MB zipped, as of 2019 12 01].
  • Folder mapnik: is the TERRAIN database fr XXXX contains most map tile image files, and is therefore huge. [c. 80 MB zipped, as of 2019 12 01].
  • Folder mapnik1: is the OpenStreetMap view. contains other map tile image files, and is therefore huge. [c. 80 MB zipped, as of 2019 12 01].

Since the map and sound files are so huge, it is also possible to download those just for a single study at a time. In this case, the zipped file for a single region will be of the order of 1.6 GB, for the Vanuatu study, for example.
