On my phone, I have used several different players to play from ~/Music, several different editors to edit files in ~/Documents, and several different gallery apps to display media from ~/Pictures. Using the shared filesystem rather than app-specific storage gives many nice properties: I can freely switch between apps that read the same formats, I have full control of my data so I can manually batch import and export trivially, and I can synchronize my files using a provider of my choice. It leads to greater transparency, portability, and flexibility.
I see that there have been severalrequests for syncing and for betterimport--all of these problems could be elegantly solved without bloat by allowing users access to the passes directory used by the application.
