There are certain things that seem impossible without a daemon:

Update folders when the system switches between light & dark. Dark mode icons #41
Finder sidebar icons. Create a tiny icon to match the icons in the sidebar #36

I think we should avoid installing a daemon by default, but there certainly seems to be some recurring interest in this functionality.
