Installed a program today that placed its icon in ~/.local/share/icons/. Yofi picked its .desktop file but not the icon. I had to copy the icon to ~/.icons/ to make it work.

Thanks, that's indeed a bug of extracting the icon lookup crate, see l4l/freedesktop-icon-lookup#1
