The first search a user performs is painfully slow as indexing occurs before the search itself is performed. It would be ideal if there was a flag to set indexing to occur on page load.

If there is a concern for DDoSing your blog by indexing on every page load, then setting the indexing to occur on focus (when a user clicks the input, the data is fetched) would be an improvement. This assumes the indexing is triggered by the search itself which may be an invalid assumption.
