Password + Yubikey... is there a way to use either and not both?

My use-case is the following... could someone let me know if this is possible or how else I would achieve something like this.

At home
I do not want to type my long password every time (carpal tunnel is creeping in). It would be nice to unlock my database with only a Yubikey (or similar). The idea is that my Yubikey will always be at home, plugged in.

Not at home and/or mobile
Password-only unlock (plus biometric option on the mobile). This is how I currently have my database set up and works fine

The AND mechanism of password + [challenge-response or key file] is a little limiting.

Not directly, no. You can create a parent database that uses only yubikey that then auto opens a child database using password. Then, you can choose to open either database.
