fresh debian vm, fresh k3s installation; getting failed to get docker runtime info

I have this Debian host in a proxmox cluster. I have installed and uninstalled k3s a few times using the shell script provided.

This time when I'm trying to install k3s, it gets installed, but the systemctl service won't start.

I checked the logs, the last line says:

msg="failed to get docker runtime info: Cannot connect to the Docker daemon at unix:///var/run/docker.sock. Is the docker daemon running?"

Isn't docker installed as part of k3s installation?

No... k3s comes with containerd. This is well covered in our docs. If you want to use docker instead of the embedded containerd, you'll need to install and start docker first.

I solved this problem. This was some permission issue on the ~/.kube directory.

But I have a similar problem on another node (vargrant vm on another node) which is acting as worker to the one we discussed. I have installed it with:

The connection to the server localhost:8080 was refused - did you specify the right host or port?

I tried copying the config, but it does not exist:

sudo cp /etc/rancher/k3s/k3s.yaml ~/.kube/config

Both are debian bookworm.

Agents don't have a copy of the admin kubeconfig, only servers.

no, you can't use kubectl on agents (or any other host) unless you copy the admin kubeconfig there yourself.
