Scandinavian letters not appearing in terminal

I am successfully running papertty on a raspberry pi zero 2 and a waveshare 4.2 inch display. I am running a terminal with tmux. However, the letters æ ø å is not showing.

I am running tmux over ssh on another machine and here the letters do appear. That makes me think the bug comes from PIL or from the implementation in papertty.

I have tried with the default font and terminus. I use terminus on another device that shows these letters.

Any help or advice is appreciated!
