Hello!
I see that in main branch You use packet markdown, but in last release (1.0.1) You use markdown2. Markdown2 has nasty bug with footnotes numbering (trentm/python-markdown2#536 (comment)). Markdown packet has not this bug (Python-Markdown/markdown#1367 (comment)).

Can You release new version with packets changing?
