Org-mode to PDF respecting .dotx style.

I need to create a PDF document which respects a style provided in a .dotx template.

I want to write the content in org-mode.

Can you suggest approaches to this?

• Can --reference-doc be used in this context?
• Would it be better to try to extract the style into a different format?
• Maybe convert the template to org and use that as the starting point?

I think your best bet is to modify pandoc's default reference-doc for docx to match the styles from your .dotx template as closely as possible, then convert from org-mode to docx, and export the PDF from within MS Word.

You can obtain a copy of the default reference-doc via pandoc -o custom-reference.docx --print-default-data-file reference.docx (See also the manual). For tips on modifying custom-reference.docx, this article may be helpful. To convert from org mode to docx, you can run

pandoc input.org -o output.docx --reference-doc=custom-reference.docx

Finally, just print to PDF in Word.
