tested this again today and the issue continues. sync appears to be bringing in new (or updated?) groups and deleting old ones but when groups get deleted (or updated?) their images in the media library do not get deleted, and a 2nd copy of the image is brought in with a "-1" appended to its filename. the original image remains in the library unattached to a group.
(my assumption (may be inaccurate) is that if there are, say, 20 groups at any point in time there should only be 20 group images in the media library).
@jough74 Thanks for reporting this. I believe this is happening under a specific set of circumstances because I have heard reports of this from some users and for other users (including me), it's not happening. I plan to focus on this bug in the next couple of weeks and will update you here when I have more information. But you're correct, the group images should not be duplicating like that.

Images used to get removed once a group was deactivated but no longer. My media library is now full of duplicates.
