TypeScript broke the library #1

Somehow a newer release of TypeScript has totally broken this library. Trying to narrow down which release did it and why.

With 3.9.9 and 4.1.5 everything is working fine. Switching to 4.2.4 and higher seems to break things.

Based on what I know now, I should probably rewrite in zod.
Though Relay is actually quite good these days so perhaps it's not necessary.
