Describe the Feature Request

Regarding Ionic for Angular, official support is provided up to version 20.x. Are there plans to support versions 21 and higher?

Or, it's likely functioning, but its operation in version 21 hasn't been officially confirmed?

Describe the Use Case

It has been one month since Angular 21.0 was released, so we are planning to upgrade. We also want to adopt the latest version of Ionic.

Is it really not supported? I upgraded to 21 without any problems and without need to use --legacy-peer-deps, just official cli with ionic start still uses 20 version though

I can see that you have updated the supported Angular version in the Ionic framework for Angular v19 and v20.

Do you have any update or timeline for when Angular v21 will be supported?

The Support Policy states that v20 is the maximum supported version, there is no test app for v21, and the Ionic starter projects are on v20.
So I assume that Angular v21 is not officially supported yet?

Angular v22 is scheduled for the week of 2026-05-18, so that is also coming soon.

I just tried adding a test-app as per the docs here, to get an indication of the level of support for Angular 21.

The entire playwright test suite passes, and there are no major changes needed, so I ended up adding a PR with the new ng21 app. Let me know if it is of any relevance to you, otherwise I will remove the PR again to avoid confusion.

Thanks for checking in! We definitely plan on supporting Angular v21, but we don't have a specific timeline to share just yet.

Because of the architectural changes in this version, it’s not a straightforward 'plug-and-play' upgrade for Ionic Framework. We’ve seen reports of breaking changes when migrating projects to v21, so we want to be thorough in our investigation to ensure everything stays stable. We’ll keep the community posted as we dig deeper!

Thanks for the nudge! Angular 21 support is still in our plans — we haven't forgotten about it.

At the moment we don't have a timeline to share, as our team is currently heads-down on Ionic Framework v9. v9 introduces a more modular architecture and React Router 6 support, among other things. You can find more details on what we're working toward in our Ionic Framework 8.8 announcement post.
