No difference between floats = transparent / normal

Hi, I set floats = "transparent" but see no difference with the setting set as "normal". Why this?

The border is surrounded by a space, visible near the "o" of "rawso". If I understand this correctly it's the space occupied by the border character. Correct? Is there a way to have the border at the far end of that space, and the space inside instead of outside?
