Oh! If you decide to do this, I have some experience with Discord administration and could help out!

Some issues/shortcomings with the Discord solution:

  • Investigate if it is possible to show the chat content without needing to login -- our discussions are open and it is nice to be able to read without needing to log in
  • Gitter supports login with GitHub/GitLab auth

I have recently used Discord a couple of times for some none-IT stuff, and on that occasion popped in to urllib3's room to see how it works for an open source project as well.
Discord feels undeniably very smooth and polished everywhere (apps, web), however, the two shortcomings listed above are still very much an issue.

Personally, Gitter is good enough (IMHO) for realtime chat.
And for more forum board-like functionality we'll also be exploring GitHub Discussions; see the introductory post by @kgriffs: Welcome to Falcon Discussions!.

IMHO it also makes sense to wait for a while and see what Gitter develops to under Matrix [1].
