External LED

This is for version 1.0-a/b/c. Version 1.1 has dedicated pins.
Connect a LED to 5v with a resistor rated for your LED.
There are a few options, but none would be considered easy.
Remove the existing PC13 led and solder on your own.
Use an unused pin such as PA0
to connect the a resistor and LED.
NOTE: You will have to modify and re-flash the software to drive this pin instead.
