Consider Font Awesome performance.

It seems that the individual SVG version might be more suitable for the typical use case of the theme

This choice might also affect the implementation of the CSS and/or the main layout, which is also open for discussion

The free plan suggests that there is a quota of 10K views/month, which makes the hosting of the free icons a good option if the theme becomes popular and/or if a few users of the theme become popular enough, since the use of the above quota is pooled from a single master.
