Goal of P2MetadataMojo attachP2Metadata?

Signing artifacts using the Maven jarsigner plugin, I've noticed it tries to sign attached artifacts too.

Two attached artifacts are contributed by P2MetadataMojo:

• p2content.xml
• p2artifacts.xml

Wondering what happens if I set attachP2Metadata to false? What's the scope of this mojo?

In the meantime I have excluded those two artifacts from signing by using:

<excludeClassifiers>
  <classifier>p2metadata</classifier>
  <classifier>p2artifacts</classifier>
</excludeClassifiers>
