As stated in the gts help file, the argument characters only supports 2-way interactions of grouping variables and it assumes to create all the possible combinations. There are 4 groups specified in that case and doesn't exist some combinations. Currently I don't have know how to create a limited grouping matrix beyond 3 levels based on the given (and restricted) characters.
