I'm aware of some efforts like Quarto (https://github.com/quarto-dev/quarto-cli/).

However, I'm looking for something that can be easily customized and embedded in existing website designs.

A combination of CSS styles and some reasonable Javascript to provide citation and footnote functionality (linking, formatting).

There's also PubCSS (https://github.com/thomaspark/pubcss/) but I couldn't easily get it to work.

What are you using now, even if it's a static site generator like Quarto or Docusaurus? How are you making it work for you?
