Writing to sys.stdout fails when using gzip/bzip compression #1819

This can be found throughout the scripts in the distribution. It can be fixed by simply changing the wrapper default from

sys.stdout

to

sys.stdout.buffer

The latter will instruct python3 to use stdout as a binary output stream, rather than Unicode (default).
