debug expressions are compiled away for --release (tweet)

If you want your internal invariants checked but deployed versions should run cycle-efficiently, then debug expressions are your friends. E.g.

debug assert size(tree) > 0;

will assert in --debug mode while developing a buggy version, but once corrected and deployed in --release mode it won't bother consuming cycles.
