Since Cruiser 5 is beta mode. When I'm going to DL and install, will it overwrite/replace my existing Cruiser 4.x Version or will it be independent in parallel without influence on Cruiser 4.x?

Reason: Testing is ok but I need a reliable working version for navigation when out there.

It replaces the existing version. If you are traveling, you can test the Beta later.

You downloaded the hillshading data? Can post a screenshot?

Hillshading appears at zoom level 9.
This is how it works with all map themes, also from OpenAndroMaps and Freizeitkarte.

The performance when showing hillshade is so good in my opinion. It appears after I've downloaded it.

I will do some more tests in next days.

The various advanced options to avoid cities, prefer forests, etc. were currently removed
as they do not seem to work correctly (?) and often cause confusion with the route results.

We probably need more improvements in the driving profile and see which option is really needed again.

Also avoid cities currently avoids only >50K cities,
so it's better to use no-go areas for better customization of route planning.

I would welcome it if the Avoid Cities option were reintroduced. Otherwise, I now have to create a no-go area for every city I want to avoid for Germany and Europe.
And so far, avoiding cities has actually worked very well and the route was very pleasant without cities.

I found the avoid cities option also not too bad, some strange behaviour only sometimes in cities leaving the main road and coming back to it after 300 to 500 meters, but this is visible while driving and can easily be ignored. Also the prefer green areas, I would like to have back. I drive with both options all the time and have no big issues with it.

@DolomitesTom During off-list discussions, it was decided that 2 themes (light+dark) were enough, so Biker didn't get included - But I replicated it and kept working on it. I have just made a quick fix to the Secondary/Tertiary "yellow" issue - so Tertiary roads are now a light purple to make the difference obvious.

Also included is "Biker-2" which uses my MotoRider road colours but keeps the "all black" road captions - this is what I presently use in navigation, it's easier to read that the fancy colour badges in my main theme - which is best for planning/desktop use.

Place this ZIP in Android\data\gr.talent.cruiser\files\maps\_themes :
biker-mapsforge.zip

Both of these also benefit from zoom-vs-detail enhancements such as thin "hairlines" at early zoom, then more detail as you get closer in. If any of the colours are not to your liking, open the XML in Notepad++ use an HTML Color Picker to find better ones. There are some useful comments within the XML to help you find relevant sections.

Above Biker theme does not have several improvements and changes we made in Motorider theme all this time.
(making the text comparison more difficult)

Strange error report @devemux86:

1. Create a (very short test) route (set start, end)
2. Long-press the route > [More ...] > [Delete route]
3. Nothing happens/route is NOT deleted!
4. Re-do steps from 2) again - route is properly deleted

This is reproducible for a short test route (attached) when it is created from the map, but does NOT happen when the same route is loaded from My Collection.

It does also not happen on some other tested routes.

I believe I found out what's going on...

• I have set the BRouter advanced options to generate two alternative routes.
• For that particular route the two alternatives are absolutely congruent, which is not to be seen on first sight.
• When selecting [Delete route] for the first time, the first "alternative" is deleted (revealing the second, 100% identical route).
• After selecting [Delete route] again, also the second "alternative" (and with that all "visible" routes) is deleted/removed.

Is there a possibility to improve that behaviour?

Or even better: can BRouter be instructed to NOT create congruent/identical alternatives at all when there are none?

BRouter can be asked to calculate the Original, 1st, 2nd, 3rd alternative. See how it works on BRouter website.
This is different from other routers that can be asked to calculate a list of 2-3 alternatives
and the result may contain just 1 route if there are no different alternatives.

I do not know if we can compare the BRouter alternatives somehow and drop the "same" ones.

Next Cruiser update will try to filter BRouter responses in case of alternative routes is enabled.

When an alternative route is the same (e.g. compare length) as one of the already added routes,
then it will not be included in the final result.

The data is hosted on Google Drive, so unfortunately it cannot be used automatically by apps.

You can download hgt data from anywhere and unzip them in Cruiser's "hgt" folder.
They will be used automatically. Convenient if you select "media" as storage folder.

Now the hgt files are downloaded automatically with all offline maps.
If there is interest for external hgt files, I can add an option to use internal or external hgt data.

I have a folder containing @SonnyLidarDTM's files but due to compatibility issues with a GIS I had to change the extension to .hgt.zip.
I wanted to avoid, if possible, having the same duplicate files.

@SonnyLidarDTM downloaded files are zip, you have to unzip them to be used by Cruiser.

So you will have a folder with possible sub-folders containing *.hgt files.

I just tried 5.0.0,. My first observations:

• All content (My collection) and settings from 4.0.2 were transferred correclty.
• "Show on map" does not work anymore for Routes. Disable-reenable does not help. Favorites are ok Tracks not checked
• Cruiser sometimes crashed / needed looong time when loading a Route from My collection. Worked perfectly in 4.0.2.
• Route overlay disappeares when closing and reopening the app.
• Map rendering slower than before.

don't understand what you want to say with this. With cruiser 5 the map structure loads at least 10 seconds until all display sections change from grey rectangle into the map and again many seconds until the labels are displayed. In Cruiser 4 the zooming is done without any interruption, at least factor 10 quicker than in cruiser 5. Sorry to say, but it's true (have loaded cruiser 5 on my Samsung Galaxy S8+, this was a performant device), Cruiser 4 still on Samsung A52 G5.

I mean that there is a new Motorider map theme by @MotoUKRider with probably different font sizes.
It is a first version, it could need improvements based on the reports of all users.

About the map engine, as explained above, switching map theme, hillshading, map appearance settings (like font size)
requires a new map rendering from the beginning to process again the map with the changed map options.

After the first time, the next rendering of the same area is instant without delays.
Compare the app restart: Cruiser 5 shows the map immediately, with Cruiser 4 we have to wait...

Or the scrolling of Germany or Netherlands at small zoom levels when vegetation appears.
Cruiser 5 after the first rendering has smooth scroll.
Cruiser 4 is much slower as it constantly renders consuming battery.

Also, as explained above, there is no going back to the many issues of OpenGL and the wasted time of the past.
We can only move forward with improvements. 🙂

Could it be memory limit? Some devices have only 2-3GB of free memory when system loads. They have plenty of storage, enbough CPU+GPU, but memory could be limited. Especially having more apps. So just wondering, if this couldnt be the case? Dunno, how much memory Cruiser v5 would need, when active scrolling/moving map area "live"... It seems that for bios, storage or memory are not enough/persistent so his experience is worse than with v4...

Ja, sieht ganz gut aus, aber so würde ich beim Fahren aktuell nicht mehr klar kommen mit der Ansicht. Das Thema ist ja schon bekannt und von daher werde ich mal abwarten was kommt. Ich habe mir als Backup die Cruiser V4 apk mal gespeichert.

My biggest wishes are already 3D view and the high contrast setting. I was able to install Cruiser 5 on a test cell phone. Yes, it looks quite good, but I wouldn't be able to cope with the view when driving at the moment. The issue is already known, so I'll wait and see what happens. I have saved the Cruiser V4 apk as a backup.

Habt ihr auch eine Abfrage eingebaut, ob man auf V5 umstellen möchte? Stand heute wäre eine Umstellung für mich ein absoluter Rückschritt. Ich komme beim Fahren mit der Ansicht absolut nicht zurecht.

Have you also included a query as to whether you want to switch to V5? As things stand today, a changeover would be an absolute step backwards for me. I absolutely can't cope with the view when driving.

b23 working fine here - I find a Hillshading "magnitude" setting of 125 fairly good for the hilly bits of the UK.

As for layout/appearance, it ain't arf bad 😸

As I don't install beta versions on my dedicated “motorcycle navi smartphone”, I've just done my first “on the road” test with my everyday smartphone and Cruiser 5 (beta 23).

Basically the version works well, apart from a few things I noticed:

• The map does not smoothly update itself while driving, but jerkily about 2x per second; but since you should be looking at the road while driving anyway, this is unpleasant, but bearable. The jerky map movement is independent from the activated map layers. And yes: "Animated location" is active in the settings.
• What is more serious is the fact that the map lags quite a bit when re-planning routes and placing new shaping- or waypoints. This is true especially with a larger zoom, when you have to place points precisely (e.g. in urban areas to “hit” directional lanes correctly). Then it takes a few seconds of thought until the map is displayed correctly and you can place new points or select existing points for editing. Maybe the map performance can be improved in these situations!?
• In my opinion, the display of tunnels in the “Motorider light” theme is still in need of some improvement. I will write a separate post about this in the corresponding topic.
• The lack of the map orientation option “Movement direction 3D” is a pity, but - FOR ME! - certainly not a reason to quit using Cruiser.

Finally, something OT of my "in-the-field" testing: I think it's a bit of a shame that posts that are critical of Cruiser 5 are being deleted. I think an open discussion should also allow for the potentially negative aspects (although I understand when repeated complaints are deleted)...

"Animated location" is active in the settings.

Try the opposite and turn it off.

Animations cause the map position to be several meters behind the real user location.
All apps have the same problem with animations, because that's how animations work.

Regarding 3D view, I think that sometimes we could think that a map view similar that our view is better, but 2D view is much better to see some road features like rondabouts or some "difficult" diversions. I've been using it for many years (more than 3D mode). Even north up is better to keep the orientation when running unknown roads.

As says @bios4 , when I look Cruiser when driving, I just look the screen less than one second, so the map never moves.

Cruiser is much more than 3D. There are a lot of features created by user ideas or requests. This is not usual in most apps...

Wasn't there a "Stop simulation" action available since one of the last Cruiser 4 versions when long-pressing the navigation button (during route simulation)?

Is this gone on purpose?
I seem to remember that you included this so that it would behave the same way as during navigation (long press > stop)...

Navigation has 3 states: on, pause, off.

Simulation only has the states: on and off.
So just press the navigation button again to stop the simulation (without extra work).

For a while we had a long press menu, but as it did not offer anything extra, it was removed.

A small suggestion. Since the map download screen is one of the first new users will see, maybe add a word of explanation next to "BRouter"?
For example "BRouter (routing data)"?

Possibly, in the second line, two words of explanation for each of these three elements? Although apart from BRouter, even for beginners, everything is probably clear.

Why is there nothing under “available” in the DropBox? I actually wanted to keep track of the versions here with my test cell phone to see when 3D is included. I've always downloaded the latest APKs from there and transferred them to the test phone via cable, as I don't want to set up an account there.

What about Reverse Auto Zoom and the routing option favouring green regions and forests? Are these two functions now also irretrievably lost?

Prefer forests is not working properly. If someone can fix it, we could see it again.
Reverse auto-zoom does not exist in navigators, as the norm is to use a small zoom at high speeds.

Actually, I didn't want to contribute any more, because the censorship of contributions that, even if they were uncomfortable, were only factual criticism, have taken on dictatorial traits and are not compatible with my understanding of democracy.

What are the 3 minimum and maximum speed settings on the autozoom for? The sliders do not work with the two additional minimum speed settings.

I also had several crashes under Android 10 during various actions. B8 seems to me to be relatively unstable.
