Users might write: "go check out delta.chat", which is not a valid url per se, but the intention of the sender and the perception of the receiver in such a case would clearly be that this is a link to a web page. A regex like \S+\.\S+ could probably detect all of these, but needs postprocessing to remove false positives.

we could use http://data.iana.org/TLD/tlds-alpha-by-domain.txt to make sure it only converts links with valid TLDs (note that we need to alias the punycode with it's unicode representations)

Google just got the TLD's .mov and .zip, this shows that we need to curate / black-list certain top level domains from this feature.

Say for example I send the following message:

you need to download the file then extract myFile.zip to see the images I made from your wedding party

I don't really want myFile.zip to be made into a clickable link.

Besides the confusion there are also more general security fears that might be worth a second issue, maybe to show a warning like for puny code urls: https://thestack.technology/zip-domain-security-fears/
