Link to the interactive visualization
Hello everyone, I have created the first version of choropleth to visualize how many people in each US county are paying more than 30% of their income on rent, utilities and housing related bills. The data I used was CHAS data- Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy provided by HUD. I aggregated CHAS data and combined it with the US county's geography boundary data to create this visualization
This project is motivated by the fact that Fred or those who work in affordable housing policy-making do not have an access to the tools or organized data about how serious the cost of housing situation is in each county. In fact, the CHAS I used was pretty messy and there were many definitions I had to look up online. Their data points was also scattered around and had to be aggregated as well.
The visualization shows how much of the population in each county spend more than 30% of their income on housing. When you hover your mouse over each county, you can also learn how much of the population spend more than 50% of their income on their housing as well, which help you see how serious and upsetting the current housing cost for renters in each county is.
This is only the first iteration of this visualization, as I collect more data, I will make the map display other statistics such as homelessness per capita and median income of each county.
Please let me know if you have feedback or other helpful improvement idea and please feel free to use this for your own research!
