d3-force layout - only radial on nodes without edges seems not to work properly

I would like to know if someone in the cytoscape.js community already used this layout for the same purpose with success, and eventually work on a fork in order such layout to be supported.

The idea is to create a technology radar with positioning of nodes as blips of the radar, relying on such simulation.
Unfortunately, I'm fully blocked at this stage.
