Idea for Profile Images: Generate profile pictures from initials

One of the things I have noticed on my site is that students often don't upload a profile picture. This leads to the default image being used over and over on the member library/search page.

I wondered if there might be a simple way to use initials, similar to how Google handles profile images when the user doesn't upload an image.
