<li><h2>Abdominal/Abdomen</h2><p>One section of the body structure; position varies between organisms.</p></li>
<li><h2>Abiotic</h2><p>Component of an environment that is non-living.</p></li>
<li><h2>Algae</h2><p>A simple aquatic plant that contains chlorophyll, but lack leaves, roots and vascular tissue.</p></li>
<li><h2>Antennae</h2><p>A pair of sensory structures that are used to sense touch, smell, taste and temperature.</p></li>
<li><h2>Benthic</h2><p>Bottom of a water body.</p></li>
<li><h2>Biotic</h2><p>Component of as environment that is living.</p></li>
<li><h2>Carapace</h2><p>Hard dorsal part of an exoskeleton.</p></li>
<li><h2>Carnivorous</h2><p>Feeds on animal matter.</p></li>
<li><h2>Copepods</h2><p>Small microscopic aquatic crustacean.</p></li>
<li><h2>Crustaceans</h2><p>A group of organisms typical covered in a hard shell (yabbies, crabs, shrimp).</p></li>

<li><h2>Detitivorous</h2><p>An organism that feeds on and breaks down dead plant and animal matter. They are essential to returning nutrients to <br />the ecosystem.</p></li>
<li><h2>Detritus</h2><p>Waste from plants or animals.</p></li>
<li><h2>Elytra</h2><p>Hard forewings used to protect the membranous hind wings of insects in the order Colepotera.</p></li>
<li><h2>Filter feeding</h2><p>Feed by straining suspended matter from water.</p></li>
<li><h2>Gill</h2><p>The respiratory organ of aquatic animals, as fish, that breathe oxygen dissolved in water.</p></li>

<li><h2>Herbivorous</h2><p>An organism that feeds on plant matter only.</p></li>
<li><h2>Hydrophobic</h2><p>Tends to repel or fails to mix with water.</p></li>
<li><h2>Inverterbrate</h2><p>An animal lacking a backbone.</p></li>
<li><h2>Larva</h2><p>Early stage in the lifecycle of some organisms.</p></li>

<li><h2>Macrophytes</h2><p>An aquatic plant that can be seen with the naked eye.</p></li>
<li><h2>Omnivorous</h2><p>An organism that feeds on plant and animal matter.</p></li>
<li><h2>Organism/s</h2><p>Any living plant, animal or single celled life form (or groups of).</p></li>
<li><h2>Oxygenated</h2><p>Enriched with oxygen.</p></li>

<li><h2>Parasitic</h2><p>An organism that lives as a parasite (lives on or in another organism and benefits at the hosts expense).</p></li>
<li><h2>Phytoplankton</h2><p>Freely floating (often minute) plants that drift with water currents.</p></li>
<li><h2>Predatory</h2><p>An organism that hunts, captures and consumes another species.</p></li>
<li><h2>pronotum</h2><p>Upper surface of the prothorax (segment of the insect behind the head).</p></li>
<li><h2>Prothorax</h2><p>The first part of the thorax of an insect. Usually has the first set of legs attached.</p></li>
<li><h2>Rostrum</h2><p>Elongated piercing and sucking mouthparts of insects in the order Hemiptera.</p></li>
<li data-role="list-divider">S-U</li>
<li><h2>Sediment</h2><p>Solid particles that settle out of a liquid mixture; minerals weathered or precipitated and accumulate on the beds of waterways.</p></li>
<li><h2>Silt</h2><p>Fine sand/clay (sedimentary particles) that are carried by running water, and eventually sink to the bottom of a water body</p></li>
<li><h2>Siphon</h2><p>A tubular organ of the respiratory system of some insects that is used as a breathing tube.</p></li>
<li><h2>Species</h2><p>A group or organisms capable of breeding and producing fertile offspring.</p></li>
<li><h2>Stagnant</h2><p>A body of water that has an unpleasant smell as a result of the lack of water movement.</p></li>
<li><h2>Substrate</h2><p>The surface on which an organism grows on, or is attached to.</p></li>
<li data-role="list-divider">V-Z</li>
<li><h2>Tarsi</h2><p>Feet of an insect which sometimes ends in claws.</p></li>
<li><h2>Tentacles</h2><p>Unsegmented flexible limbs/appendages used to grasp food or assist in moving.</p></li>
<li><h2>Vegetation</h2><p>Plants in the environment.</p></li>
<li><h2>Vertebrate</h2><p>Groups of animals distinguished through the possession of a backbone/spinal column.</p></li>
<li><h2>Wetlands</h2><p>An area of land consisting of marshes and swamps (saturated land).</p></li>
<li><h2>Zooplankton</h2><p>Freely floating (often minute) animals that drift with water currents.</p></li>
