Temperature monitoring

Hi everyone! 👋

First of all, thank you so much for all the work that goes into Cockpit. I'm fairly new to system management, and having a tool like this makes a huge difference in learning and understanding how things work—so I really appreciate it!

I’ve been exploring the monitoring features and noticed that while there is a CPU temperature indicator, I couldn’t find a way to track historical CPU temperature data. I might be missing something, but from what I’ve gathered, Cockpit doesn’t currently provide historical graphs or logs for CPU temperature.

I’m curious—has this been discussed or attempted before? Do you think it would be a useful feature? If no one is currently working on it, I’d be interested in exploring what it would take to implement it myself and would really appreciate any pointers or thoughts.

We only provide CPU Temperature on demand if available, we do offer historical CPU/Memory/Disk I/O metrics via PCP. By default it doesn't seem that PCP doesn't log any temperature data, and I am not if it is possible.

Right, PCP doesn’t seem to expose temperature metrics, at least not according to their documentation.

I was thinking there might be two possible directions to approach this:

• One option could be to implement CPU temperature monitoring directly in Cockpit, trying to use the feature of realtime CPU temp monitoring that is already implemented, and similar to how PCP metrics are handled—as an optional, toggleable feature.

• The other would be to propose this functionality to the PCP project itself and see if they feel it fits within their scope.

As for the first option, does that sound like a feasible path forward? I’m still looking at things from a very high-level perspective, so I’d really appreciate any feedback or corrections on that idea.

And of course, I’m also open to discussing whether this kind of feature makes sense in Cockpit at all. Personally, I’d find it quite useful, but I’m not sure how broadly that feeling is shared. I know there are other tools for this, but thought it might be a natural fit here as well.

We already show the CPU temperature, so does this mean storing historical data? That isn't something Cockpit wants to get into and another thing to consider is that you probably want to use libsensors as this contains heuristics and fixes for sensor detection.
