when creating a new profile, the "fallback" avatar is grey until eg. a message is sent, and then turning to its final color. this is on desktop (on iOS, the avatar has the color immediately, EDIT: android is delayed as well)

i know, this is related to the key generation, there was some discussion at #7291

it is worth improving that, esp. if the technical reasons for that flaw are questionable.

it is a bad first impression, that is visible to lots, virtually all, user. became visible also in some recently done videos.

to close the issue, at best create the key at the very beginning, that way, no event or updates are needed at all, and the avatar is just stable
