Goal 5 of The Carpentries Strategic Plan reads: Strengthen organisational structure and capacity to be strategic and responsive.

One objective under this goal is:

  • Establish workflow and documentation for our essential ongoing processes (e.g. budget creation and review, communication channel use), and identify areas for effective and appropriate automation or other improvements needed to scale support.

This issue tracks progress in establishing and documenting workflows for our essential ongoing processes.

Related: #12, #37, and #55

This was previously included in #38, but is being extracted into its own issue.

Objective: Establish workflow and documentation for our essential ongoing processes (e.g. budget creation and review, communication channel use), and identify areas for effective and appropriate automation or other improvements needed to scale support.

In Q1 & Q2, The Core Team completed work to define and identify our essential ongoing processes. During July & August, the team spent some time reviewing all documentation associated with these essential processes. We labelled each process as having documentation that is "Completed", "In Progress", "Not Yet Started" or "Outdated". As of 1 September 2023, 50% of our essential ongoing processes are fully documented and 50% require documentation to be created or updated.

The Business Team has worked with our programmatic teams to create estimates for updating or creating documentation where needed. The team has set a goal to complete these documentation updates by the end of December 2023.

As of 7 May 2024, 65% of our essential ongoing processes are fully documented and 35% require documentation to be created or updated. Teams have adopted a process of continually updating documentation when changes are made to workflows and tracking decisions related to workflows in The Carpentries Decision Tracker.
