Change BottomNavigationBar top padding

Hi,
is there a way to change the top padding (the space above the touchable ripple) in the BottomNavigationBar?
Looking around in the source code, it seems to me that it is fixed, but maybe I'm missing something.

I would like to have a little less space. The bar is occupying too much space as it is compared to the bars, for example, of Google Maps or Gmail.
