We see lots of duplicate authors that are actually the same.

Describe the solution you'd like

The ability to merge authors that show up on a search list.

Describe alternatives you've considered
We end up having to edit all the books so that they point to the "right" author.

Hello @oculos

If you are the instance administrator, the best thing to do is to use the commands :
https://docs.joinbookwyrm.com/management-commands.html

The work is quite clean.

For my part, I've automated this based on unique identifiers (e.g. ISNI). While waiting for bookwrym to be optimized, this is the best I've found.

Giving the power for the users ro request certain merges(aurhors and books) should make the life of the maintainers quite easier, as they should only be responsible to aprove the merge and make a few ajustments as they see fit.

If somehow such actios from the maintainers could go through the final aproval of the readers, as a way to make sure that the changes beinf made are correct.
