Can you offer any help regarding TrueNAS as a host for Frigate please?

Hello All

Short version: please can anyone help me with a step-by-step simpleton’s guide to installing Frigate v0.13.2 by any of the three methods available on the new "Electric Eel" version of TrueNAS (TN) please?

Background: I’m presently running Dragonfish-24.04.2.5 (“DF”) and on it an original TrueNAS (TN) community app which is v0.13.2. It utilises a USB Coral TPU and has been running perfectly well for six months. The hardware is a twelve year old, four core eight threaded Xeon with 16GB of RAM and no GPU at the moment.

I recently upgraded TN to Electric Eel 24.10.1 (“EE”) but the Frigate version which it uses - 0.14.1 - demands much greater CPU resource (>30% for this app alone) from my TrueNAS box than I can cope with, frequently spiking the total CPU use to >90%.

This has meant I have downgraded back to DF where the CPU use is always below 50% (with the demand from Frigate 0.13.2 itself only amounting to 10% or so).

I note that there is an option in DF to u/g Frigate to a later version - 0.14 - which I have not embraced because I expect the resource demand to again be too high and I don't want to risk being unable to downgrade.

What I hope to be able to do is upgrade TN to EE and then by one of three methods install Frigate 0.13.2 and from then on not install a later Frigate version. I can do it either by

(1) A custom app via the TN UI: Apps|discover apps|custom app

(2) Jailmaker running dockge, c/o the excellent video guides from @Stux on the TrueNAS forums, and my adding a docker compose yaml to it

(3) Dockge running as an official TN app, and my adding a docker compose yaml to it

I tried option (1), copying the settings from the Frigate app (0.13.2) UI noted on DF, and I ultimately failed because I didn't understand what to enter in the various options.

I also tried option (2) but I get errors which I can’t work out - something to do with the Coral USB TPU not being seen

I haven’t tried (3) due to my already coming unstuck with option 2.

There has already been some great help in the Frigate and TrueNAS forums for which I have been grateful and it has got me some way towards success but the gap between my knowledge and that needed to complete the process successfully means that victory continues to elude me!

I never did solve this problem directly but a reinstall of the official TN app, having deleted (more than) what I thought were redundant images and containers whilst experimenting, seems to have done the trick in that 0.14 is running with nominal CPU burdens.
It appears to me as though there was some sort of installation hang up with the way the official app was trying to mount the image or run the container. Clearing out the surplus has somehow allowed the process to run properly.
