How to use newspapers and periodicals in your research

Here are some key questions for a lessons about working with newspapers/periodicals?

  • What questions are newspapers/periodicals good at answering?
  • How do you find newspapers/periodicals?
  • How to read newspapers/periodicals?
  • How to use newspapers/periodicals to make an argument about the past?

Additional topics that this lesson could include:

  • A short history of newspapers in Baltimore and Maryland
  • An explanation of how newspapers can serve as a primary or a secondary source
  • An explanation of how digital databases of periodicals work

I've already put together one resource for an expanded lesson on this topic: a timeline view of Digitized Baltimore Newspapers.
