Figure out how pandoc parses references. It appears not to be linked to any of the $variables$ in the pandoc .tex template... it uses the proper csl file to format them, though, and that also isn't linked in the template...

Perhaps parse them using latex in an after-body .tex document separately so the user has more control over placement.
