Following paragraph from Using the Hierarchy browser reflect outdated values:

The amount of top-level records loaded into the hierarchy browser when it is first visited will be determined by the Items per page setting available at gears Admin > Settings > Treeview. The default value is 50 - an administrator can adjust this value up to 1,000.

The recommendation as based on internal discussion between support and @fiver-watson :

Default in a new installation is 50
Min value is 10
Max value is 10,000
