I've been thinking about this a little in the interim. It's seeming to me that there are some downsides to allowing arbitrary options, insofar as there's no rule in Linux preventing options, etc. from having filenames starting with It also requires options whose parameters, if any, are all strictly defined enough that there won't be ambiguity between what's an option and what's a command.
