Adding or removing additional references is very bad at conflict resolution

Currently there is not really a clear way to resolve conflicts when adding or removing additional references. Especially because one user can't add or remove multiple references before the documents saves. The document updates automatically on each reference added or removed. This could also get very confusing if a user is editing the document and someone else adds a new reference. A user cannot simultaneously edit the document and add additional references.
