Does respond to state changes

I've have something like the following:

<AutoExpandingTextInput
              ref="textMessageInput"
              value={this.state.currentMessage}
              ...

If I programatically change the state this.setState({currentMessage: 'foo'}) the AutoExpandingTextInput doesn't respond accordingly. It only seem to resize when I type.
