<h3> Commencement</h3>
<p>We've had an exciting semester thus far, both at Brown and at The Herald. Recently, Chancellor Emeritus
Stephen Robert '62 P'91 pledged $1 million to the student activities endowment and has promised to lead
fundraising towards its $17 million goal. The Herald covered the lack of donations to the fund since President
Ruth Simmons initially pledged $100,000. The Herald then published an editorial a week later critiquing the
fund's stagnation. That same morning the editorial ran, Robert pledged $1 million to the endowment and
promised to lead fundraising efforts for the endowment.
More recently, our coverage of the Athletic Review Committee's plan to cut four varsity teams caused quite a
stir, as we headed into our final week of production. Simmons announced at the end of last month that the four
varsity teams will be allowed to compete next year.
We are thrilled to announce the beginning of The Herald's mentorship program! With this exciting program,
current staff members will be matched individually with alumni mentors to help build relationships and make
our network stronger.

<h3>End-of-year</h3>
<p>I am writing to ask you to help support The Herald's Financial Aid Initiative through our 2011 Annual Appeal.
Our funds to date are not enough to sustain the needs of students working at The Herald for the upcoming year.
This semester, new staffers have already played a role in The Herald's coverage of: President Simmons'
decision to step down from her position at the end of the academic year, her reflections, and students'
reactions; The upcoming reopening of the Metcalf Chemistry and Research Laboratory; Brown Football's victory
at the Governor's Cup at our second ever night game.
