Joysticks in DS games?

I am using Lemuroid on my pixel fold with the gen2 backbone with only GB/GBA/GBC/NDS/3DS games on it. This issue persists across devices and controllers. GB/GBA/GBC/3DS games use the joysticks as expected and the D-Pad can be used instead if wanted. I assume this is a design choice but is there anyway to use joysticks on DS games also? I primarily play Pmon games so is possible the issue with those specifically since the DS did not have joysticks and the games themselves could be limited.
