I can find people referencing running this on linux, but I cannot seem to figure out how, is there a specific release that is missing?

You have to run the installer on Wine.

I managed to run it using this utility and loosely following this guide , but the game always crashes on me after patching :(

That should be a bit easier, since it has a GUI (even though the installation is unorthodox), but no luck there either.
