5th - In a rather unparalleled civilian intervention in military affairs, the CDC abruptly closes down Fort Detrick, a prominent military germ lab, citing "national security concerns."

A bizarre new "vaping illness" sweeps across the United States – and only the United States, despite vaping being ubiquitous elsewhere. Symptoms are described as "difficulty breathing, tiredness, chest pain, cough, and reduced weight". Most eerily, experts are said to be able to identify the illness due to the signature ground-glass opacities that appear in CT scans. 18th - The Wuhan Military Games begin. The American participants post up at Wuhan Oriental Hotel, located less than 300 meters away from the Huanan Wholesale Seafood Market.

The same day The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in partnership with the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation hosted Event 201, a high-level pandemic exercise.

27th - A COVID-19 positive patient presents for treatment at a hospital in France. They did not have a travel history, indicating the case is from community spread. Genetic analysis reveals that France's COVID-19 did not come from China or Italy.

January 2020:
