    • Please refer to section "Known Issues/Limitations" of the release notes of v3.9.0 release for more details.

Other release notes for v3.9.0 apply here too

Wireless_wifi Release v3.9.0

This release includes additions and improvements to the PIC32MZW1 and WINC devices.

New Features

  • PIC32MZW1:
    • Enterprise - support EAP-TTLSv0/MSCHAPv2 method.
    • RF Code versioning.
    • Implement Fast join - initiate authentication automatically after scan(don't wait for beacon/TBTT).
    • Support for WiFI/BT Co-existence.
    • STA/AP mode code optimisations for reduced code size.

Bug fixes

  • WINC: Fix for GPIO interrupts using incorrect callback function.
  • WINC: Fix corrupted variable when calling WDRV_WINC_SSLRetrieveCert().
  • WINC: Fix issue with WDRV_WINC_SPIReceive transmitting last received bytes.
  • PIC32MZW1: Process plaintext handshake messages(M3) after installing keys.
  • PIC32MZW1: De-authenticate with reason code REASON_CIPHER_OUT_OF_POLICY if a second RSNE is received from an AP.
  • PIC32MZW1: Fix issue where PSK was computed for Enterprise/WPA3 without checking the support of PSK AKM suite.
  • PIC32MZW1: Cleanup MAC MIB initialisation.
  • PIC32MZW1: Fix an issue where STA enters power save before 4-way handshake.
  • PIC32MZW1: Fix regression where STA ignores M1 received from the AP.

Known Issues/Limitations

  • PIC32MZW1 - Our Release is tied to crypto v3.7.6 and wolfssl v4.7.0 versions as minor, low risk observations were made with specific test applications when using the combination of latest versions(crypto v3.8.0 and wolfssl v5.4.0) repos.

    • Below observations on PIC32MZW1 will be addressed in a subsequent dot release.

    • Issue 1: Build failure due to Struct wolfSSL_Ref undefined. Seen in cases where a project does not define macro SINGLE_THREADED.

      • Workaround: Add #define SINGLE_THREADED to project configuration or remove code block using Struct wolfSSL_Ref in wc_port.c. No side effects with either approach.
    • Issue 2: Significant increase in usage of session cache and client cache in wolfssl code v5.4.0. Causes significant increase in Data mem usage.

      • Workaround: Add #define SMALL_SESSION_CACHE to project configuration to workaround the problem.
  • Both these issues are low risk as they have known workarounds, are project configuration dependent hence not necessarily seen in all apps and also because SSL enhancements from v5.x are not required for PIC32MZW1.

  • PIC32MZW1 - For those sticking to v3.7.6 crypto, a failure is observed with the xc32 v4.21: implicit declaration of function 'min' [-Werror=implicit-function-declaration]. This can be fixed by defining min() in drv_ba414e.c as shown below:

#ifndef min
#define	min(a,b)	(((a) < (b)) ? (a) : (b))
#endif

Wireless Release v3.1.1

New Features

  • Added Bypass (Ethernet) mode support for WINC. WINC1500 Socket Mode vs Ethernet Mode

The WINC modules are capable of operating in either Socket mode or Ethernet (A.K.A. bypass) mode.

• Socket mode allows an application running on the host MCU to utilize the TCP/IP stack within the firmware of the WINC device, such that the host MCU does not need to run its own TCP/IP stack. This approach is memory efficient and faster to implement. • Ethernet (bypass) mode disables the TCP/IP stack within the firmware of the WINC device, instead the host MCU can only send and receive Ethernet frames. This mode allows the host MCU to operate its own TCP/IP stack treating the WINC device as a simple Ethernet controller. This approach provides flexibility.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed MHC menu for RTOS memory allocation size change (words to bytes).

Known Issues

  • Bypass mode currently works only with the reference example - wifi_winc_sta_bypass. All other examples are configured to work with socket mode.

  • MISRA false positives:

  1. driver/winc/drv/driver/m2m_wifi.c(1140) 644 9.1 Variable 'strNetworkId' (line 1131) may not have been initialized [MISRA 2012 Rule 9.1, mandatory]
